Literary Translation

Literary translation constitutes translation of the three main literary genres (epic, lyric and drama) and their separate subgenres (short story, novel, ode, comedy, etc.). It is here that the translator’s ability shows most conspicuously. Not only do they need to convey a certain message but they also have to reproduce the same emotion, tone of voice, mood, experience, style, aesthetics, idiomatics, puns and allusions. They are expected to be literary scholars and linguists at the same time, to be aware of the subtleties of the source and target languages, to be familiar with the historical, social, cultural and political context in which the work was written and in which it is set.

Those who need literary translation are most often publishing houses or writers of fiction.
